In case you missed it, either on ABC or in "Scuttlebutt" yesterday, this weekend "Good Morning America" ran a good story on the BMW/ORACLE challenge for America's Cup. It can be seen online at: http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=6455028 It has interviews with various luminaries and some really excellent footage shot on board the BOR 90 trimaran. The current state of the Cup, briefly, is this: BMW/ORACLE is suing ALINGHI to replace C.N.E.V. as Challenger of Record for the next event. The third and final round of judicial activity is now in the New York State Court of Appeals, with final arguments to be heard next February 10th and a decision expected not sooner than mid-March. Meanwhile, ALINGHI has announced that the 33rd Cup match will be sailed sometime "in 2010 or 2011," in boats yet to be defined. They plan to have three pre-Cup events sailed in the existing ACC boats in 2009. All sorts of teams have signed up, and I do mean all sorts, not including BMW/ORACLE. If BMW/ORACLE wins the appeal, either there will be a race in giant multi-hulls, presumably in 10 months time, or Bertarelli will surrender the Cup. If ALINGHI wins, I predict the Cup will be sailed in 2010 or 2011, as a series of fleet races in 90' sport boats.
Speaking of footage, and the America's Cup, in a splendid confluence of indolence and market timing, Offshore Productions has finally got its act together to be able to offer some of our vintage films on DVD. The first three titles are these:
We shot the first, we think, Laser slalom in front of StFYC in 1973. Competitors included John Bertrand (US), Commodore Tompkins, Ed Bennett, Charlie Morgan, Don Trask and the late Carl van Duyne. "HWS" - 12 Minutes Price = $ 12.00 plus shipping.
Ted Turner's splendid America's Cup victory in Newport, 1977. "BD" - 50 Minutes Price = $ 20.00 plus shipping.
Three films: "KIALOA To Jamaica," shot on K3 in 1975 - "Big Boats," shot on the Bay in 1978, with cameos by Kenny Keefe, David Vietor, Robbie Vaughan, The Flying Nun and the late Don Vaughn - "Maximum Effort," the workup and first races of K4 in 1981, staring the usual suspects, plus Ron Holland, Jack Sutphen and David Pedrick. "KTJ" - total of 88 Minutes Price = $ 20.00 plus shipping.
